The Collecter

Hello, my name is Heidi and I am a Collector. I've been collecting for 28 years, from the first baby blanket I had to be persuaded to relinquish to the last fortune cookie fortune I opened. I'm bound. And it's bigger than just myself. I have a husband and a baby for whom I've also been collecting for the past four years (even sooner if you count the doll collection I put away for my unborn children when I graduated High School). I have a few major collections: Star Wars, Harry Potter, Disney, and dolls. Lots of dolls.
I'm also a creative type so in addition to the "things" I collect, I also collect things to make more things. Fabric, stickers, ingredients, kitchen gadgets, display trays, you name it, I've probably got it. It's safe to say I've been comfortable living in a clutter mess for a long time.
However, recent life events have begun to show me the error of my ways.
I moved into my parent's basement and was told we could only bring the bare necessities. Well, I think we have enough stuff to fill at least 20 plastic storage containers. Now that we're getting ready to move again I'm getting overwhelmed at the prospect of shifting all of this stuff. It makes my chest tight just thinking about it. And what's more is I have a 10' x 5' storage unit packed full to the brim waiting for me as soon as we're out.
Help!
So I'm starting this blog as therapy. I've heard from recovering addicts that often the best way to make a change is not to think of stopping one behavior as much as planning other behaviors to take its place. So instead of giving up my collections, I'm going to start collecting something else...sky, air, life-force, and peace. And I don't want to stop with things, I want to collect sky and simplify in my diet, my thinking, my time, and my spirit. I want to be there. So here I'll keep a chronicle of efforts and hopefully one day I'll be able to say I made it happen so you can, too. But until then, we're in this together.
